To the entire Dumas family I offer my heartfelt condolences. There is a big hole in my life without Alice being here, but I feel blessed to have had her as my sister of the heart for a long time (though not long enough). Alice loved all her children and grandchildren and was proud of each and every one of you. We laughed together, we cried together and I look forward to doing it all over again when we meet once more. My life would have been much poorer and certainly no where near as much fun without her! I love you all.

The first time I met Alice, I was a kid and Carolyn invited me into her house. I loved her house immediately. With pretty cats snoozing in the sun, a big Muppet dog named Sandy, and the aroma of something good cooking, how could I not? We went out into the kitchen and there was Carolyn's mom, Alice, tending to a huge pot of tomato sauce. She turned around and smiled at me. It was the kind of smile that puts a shy kid at ease. The kind of smile that says this mother actually likes kids and is happy that I'm here. Alice always had that happy smile for me. No matter how busy she was taking care of her kids, animals and house, no matter what kind of trouble Carolyn and I had managed to get ourselves into, Alice always took the time to welcome me, and offer me food, and the coldest glass of milk I ever had. And her smile. She had that kind of smile that isn't just with the mouth, but the whole face is involved. It borders on a laugh, and most of the time turned into one. Thank you, Alice, for having a smart, beautiful daughter who is my best friend since fifth grade, for introducing me to the wonders of Christmas shopping at the So Shore Plaza, and wearing sunglasses at night, and for so nicely explaining to me that first day why you had a leaf floating in your sauce. My heart goes out to Alice's family. May the happy memories of her beautiful smile help heal you.
