Toivo Jonas Karhu

Toivo Jonas Karhu of Hingham, formerly of Quincy, died August 9, 2018. He was 98.

Toivo proudly served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked at the Fore River Shipyard as a heat treater for Vulcan Tool Company, where he worked for 30 years. Toivo was a active member and former deacon at Park Street Church in Boston, serving on their board of missions as well as being a tutor for ESL F.O.C.U.S for 26 years. He was a former member of the Quincy Tennis Club and enjoyed playing tennis at Linden Ponds. Throughout his lifetime, he also donated over 100 pints of blood to the American Red Cross. 

Cherished husband of the late Mabel Karhu and loving friend of the late Elizabeth Harvey. Devoted father of Paul Karhu and his wife Marcia of Dennis and Joyce Wells of Weymouth. Loving brother of Hilma Albrecht of NJ. Cherished grandfather of Ken Matsumoto and Mio Cha of RI., George Matsumoto and his wife Samantha of CA and Kyoko Takanata of CA. Great-grandfather of Mika Cha, Kimi, Mya and Toby Matsumoto.

Private burial was held in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.

A Memorial Service will be held at Linden Ponds Performing Arts Center on Thursday, August 16, at 11:00 a.m.
