George Walter Nelson

Nelson, George Walter of Hingham, formerly Dorchester, died July 27, 2017.

George grew up in Dorchester and attended Roslindale High School before leaving school to proudly answer the call by joining the Navy and serving with honor in WWII.  He went on to a distinguished career in service, including working for 27 years for the Boston Police Department as a police officer and then 18 years for the Navy as security, eventually retiring at the age of 80.  George was an active member of the McKeon Post in Dorchester and the Knights of Columbus. He adored his family and was the type of person that would never think twice to help someone in need.  He enjoyed playing cards, bowling, being on the ocean and fishing, westerns as well as his beloved Red Sox.  George lived his 91 years to the fullest.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Beloved husband of the late Leonarda C. Nelson of Hingham. Devoted father of Kathleen Nelson of Hingham, James Nelson and his wife Grace of North Carolina, Maria Nelson of Hingham and the late Angela Antoniazzi. Honorary father of Janet Gallant Chambers of Hingham. Predeceased by 10 siblings. Cherished Grandpa of Jennifer and Christian Antoniazzi, Kathryn Underwoood, Anthony Nelson, Azurae Hood, Madison Chambers, Courtney Contigiani and great-grandsons Malcolm and James. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Monday from 10-11 AM in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham prior to the Funeral Mass at 11 AM. Burial in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of George may be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Plymouth MA 02360.
