Cesar Ignacio Gonzales, MD

Cesar Ignacio Gonzales, MD, age 83, passed away on Wednesday January 24, 2018 after a prolonged illness at south Shore Hospital in Weymouth surrounded by his family.

Cesar is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Gilda V. Gonzales. Devoted father of Augusto Gonzales and his wife Khoeuch of Ashland, John Gonzales of Quincy, Luis Gonzales and his wife Suzanne of Quincy, Maria Dean and her husband Gregory of Philadelphia, PA. Loving Lolo (grandfather) to Mitchell, Anthony, Alyssa, Sophia, Dominic, Naomi, Alex and Casey.

Born in Cavite City, Philippines on August 1, 1934. He was the sixth of nine children. He was brought up by his mother Consuelo because his father Arsenio, a US Guerilla in World War II, was killed by the enemy taken from his home in the middle of the night.

He was an exceptional scholar and was promoted ahead several grades and earned a full scholarship to the University of the Philippines Medical School and scored fifth place in the nationwide Philippine Medical Board Examinations. He later trained as an internist at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila and later joined the Philippine-American Life Insurance Company (PHIL-AM Life) as a medical clinician in 1960. In 1969 he was later offered a position as the Assistant Medical Director at the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston. he was joined by his wife Gilda and their four children. They resided in Watertown, MA. They later moved to Quincy in 1970 and they settled in the Merrymount area and have remained their ever since. He was board certified as a specialist in insurance medicine. He served on the United States Board of Insurance Medicine between 1984 and 1990. He also served as the Secretary to the Chairman of the Insurance Medical Group of New England from 1984 to 1987. He served as John Hancock’s Corporate Medical Director from 1987 to 1994. He retired after 25 years at John Hancock, but he remained there as a part-time medical consultant until 2002.

He loved to read books and enjoyed listening to and singing all different types of music (especially during the services at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church and while watching YouTube music videos), even in his monotone voice. He also loved to travel to different states, Canada, and even some European countries. He also served as a eucharistic minister for several years at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. The foundation of his life was his family, his greatest joys were spending time with his eight grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-6pm in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St. Quincy. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home on Monday morning at 9:15am prior to the Funeral Mass in Holy Trinity Parish in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 227 Sea Street, Quincy Monday at 10am. Burial in Mt. Wollaston Cemetery. Quincy.
