Anthony “Tony” Prestera

Anthony “Tony” Prestera, of Whitman formerly of South Weymouth, Plymouth and Boynton Beach, Florida passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home on February 21, 2015. Tony was born in the North End and raised in Jamaica Plain, Boston to the late Antonio and Frances (Russo) Prestera of Calabria, Italy.

Beloved husband of 55 years to the late Frances (Craig) Prestera. Devoted father of Theresa Doherty and her husband Mark of Whitman, Elizabeth Whittaker and her husband Mark of Plymouth and Marie DiVito and her husband Michael of South Weymouth. Treasured “Grandpa” of Eric and Jeremy Ashe, Michael, Melissa and Andrew Whittaker, Ian Maguire, Sara DiVito and the late Matthew Whittaker. Cherished companion of Ann Smith of Stoughton. Lovingly remembered by Annelise Pfeiffer, Caitlin Geer, Lindsay Shields and Colleen Pascarelli.

Affectionately known as “Timmy” to his brothers and sisters, he is survived by his sister, Catherine Rouse of Waltham and brother, Joseph Prestera and his wife Esther of Newton. Predeceased by his brother, Francis, sister, Marion Campana and her husband Eddie, and brother in law Arthur Rouse. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

After attending the Boston School for the Deaf in Randolph, Tony married Frances Craig in 1957 and in 1966, moved his family from Jamaica Plain to South Weymouth. He worked as a printer at Smith Print of Norwell, retiring in 1996 after 30 years. Tony and his wife were part of a very close group of friends that ensured the success of the newly formed Boston and Quincy Deaf Clubs, where for many years he participated in a vast array of social events. He loved to travel with his wife and friends and visited all 50 states as well as many international destinations. 

Tony’s favorite pastimes included gardening, model trains and photography. He was a passionate fan of the Bruins, as well as the Red Sox and Patriots. He will be most remembered as an enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildren’s athletic participation. Whether it was football, baseball, soccer or track, Grandpa would be there, cheering from the sidelines. As an animal lover, he held a special place in his heart for his past dogs, Jenny, Dollie and Casper. All who had the pleasure of knowing him will sadly miss him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hosp.) 

Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9:30 AM on Saturday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, 234 Pleasant Street South Weymouth at 10:30 AM. Burial to be held at a later date.
