Veteran

Anthony Joseph Schiappa

Anthony Joseph “Tony” Schiappa, a longtime resident of Hull, passed away peacefully at South Shore Hospital, surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 3, 2024.  He was 85.

Anthony was born in Boston to Theresa (Gatto) and Nicholas Schiappa and raised in the North End of Boston.  He graduated from Charlestown High School and began working at the Hardware Products Company as a machinist.  In 1962, Anthony was drafted into the United States Army and stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana.  He was honorably discharged in 1964 after serving his country for two years.  Soon thereafter, he married the love of his life, Marie Frances Touchette.  They started a family and moved to Hull in 1968, where they would spend the rest of their days together.

Anthony continued to work with Hardware Products Company and retired after working there for over 40 years.  While he worked as a machinist, Anthony also hosted the evening bingo games at St. Coletta’s Day School in Braintree.  Anthony liked to keep busy.  After retiring, he dedicated 16 years to helping at the Hingham Community Center as a general maintenance manager.  In his spare time, Anthony was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post 101 for many years.

He was devoted to his family, who lovingly referred to him as “Pal.”  He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his two grandsons.  Whether it was playing games or getting work done around the house, he made it fun.  Anthony delighted in teaching his grandsons to tie their shoes, ride bikes and drive.  When relaxing, Anthony enjoyed listening to old time radio shows and watching classic Westerns, the History Channel and Turner Classic movies.

Beloved husband of 60 years to Marie Frances Schiappa of Hull.  Devoted father to Susan Saliba and her husband, Isber, of Braintree, Sandra Schiappa of Hull, and the late Ronald Schiappa.  Cherished grandfather to Ned and Anthony Saliba. Predeceased by his parents, Theresa and Nicholas Schiappa and his siblings, Ronald and Richard Schiappa.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Wednesday, March 27th, from 9:00-10:00 AM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), Hingham.  A Funeral Mass will be held immediately following the visitation at St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church, Hull at 10:30 AM.  The burial will be at Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery in Weymouth at 12 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Anthony’s name to The American Legion, Donation Processing, PO Box 1954, Indianapolis, IN 46206.
