Annia Lowe Giger

Annia Lowe Giger, 97, of Braintree Massachusetts entered peacefully into eternal life on November 3, 2022, after a brief illness due to natural causes.

Annia (Mei Oy) Lowe was born on October 3, 1925 to Frank Lowe (also known as Liu Fook Sing) and Mak Shee Lowe (also known as Mak PikYu) in New Bedford, Massachusetts. After graduating from New Bedford High School in 1942, she attended Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing on an Army cadet scholarship. In 1946 she began work as an R.N. at the Hines VA Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. One of her patients, Robert Wayne Giger (a WWII Navy veteran from Iowa), would soon become her future husband. They married in 1947 in Boston and later made Quincy their home.

While raising their three children, Annia was a part-time homemaker, and worked weekends as a late shift nurse in the Emergency Room at Boston City Hospital. Later she transitioned to be a full-time nursing supervisor at Long Island Chronic Disease Hospital in Boston Harbor.

Annia was one of five siblings, and a devoted daughter to her mother, who she visited often. Annia was a very active member of the Quincy Community United Methodist Church in Wollaston, including the church’s Sigma Phi sorority. She traveled to China twice and enjoyed several exotic and distant cruises with family members. After retirement she would work out at the gym well into her 90’s. She taught English as a second language to those in the Quincy community, as a church outreach ministry. Annia will be remembered as gracious and charming, sincere, organized and hardworking. A salt of the earth.

Annia lost Robert, her husband and love of her life, in 1993. Annia was predeceased by her father Frank (Liu Fook Sing), sister Alice Chen, mother Mak Shee Lowe (Mak PikYu), brother George Lowe, sister Dorothy Gow and grandson Robert Yin. She is survived by her sister Jennie Fong of Cumberland, RI; son Roger Giger of Toledo, Iowa; daughter Joanne Malone (and spouse Dennis) of Weymouth; and daughter Sandra Giger of Highland Park, Illinois. Also, she has two surviving grandsons, Patrick Malone in Weymouth, and Alex Giger in Chicago.

The family invites friends & family to join in paying last respects at the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 809 Main St, South Weymouth, MA 02190. On November 13, 2022, viewing is from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral service is November 14th at 11:00 am at McDonald Keohane Funeral Home. Following the funeral service, burial will be at Blue Hills Cemetery near Braintree Five Corners, after which we will gather for a lunch reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Quincy Community United Methodist Church, 40 Beale Street, Wollaston, MA 02170, which was Annia’s spiritual home for over 70 years.
