It was probably 60 years ago that Mr. Steele was my teacher when I was about 11years old at the Pratt School .He was friendly, fair but ran a " tight ship". I don't remember him quoting Thomas Campbell but that would be typical of him to say something along those ideas. He was always teaching My condolences .

We are sorry to hear of the passing of your father. Our condolences to the entire family. Dick's legacy in the Weymouth Public Schools speaks to his being a true professional and solid school administrator. He always put the interests of students first. On a personal note, Dick hired me as a first year teacher in 1971 at East Junior High School. As time passed, Dick became a trusted friend and mentor. Together, we attended Northeastern's Graduate School. Again, we are so sorry for your loss.

We are a fortunate few that have 2 or 3 teachers that truly make a difference in our lives. Mr. Steele ( that's how I'll always remember him ) made a very positive impression on me both in the classroom and on the field. I'm a better man for having known him. My condolences to the Steele family.

To Mr. Steeleā€™s family, I am sorry for the loss of Richard. Mr. Steele was my High School Principle. He was everything you would imagine a Principle to be. He led with a quiet confidence that made me feel like we were in good hands. He is going to be etched in my fondness of memories for life that I had late in my senior year of high school. It was the first time I had to advocate for myself and no one would help me until I requested to meet with Principle Steele. He gave me my first break in life because he wanted me to succeed. I had already joined the service and was going to have to postpone entry due to an issue(that Had no malice on my part but I had made a mistake). After I explained by dilemma and my desire to go into the Navy, Mr. Steele put me at ease immediately. He was not going to let a young man who was trying to do the right thing fall through the cracks. I am forever grateful for having Mr. Steele in my life. I am proud to have had him as my school Principle. I am so sorry for the loss of this great man. I hope my words here help in a small way to reaffirm what you already know. He was a great caring man. Yours truly, Matthew Tinlin WSH1987

Truly saddened to hear about Dickā€™s passing. I not only considered him a friend but he was also a mentor for me. My first years as a principal he was always there and offered helpful advice. I have fond memories of our annual end of the school year golf outings to the Steeleā€™s New Hampshire condo. Those were great times. As you know he was a great guy and will be sorely missed!

May your family find peace in the joyous memories that Dick provided everyone. The Class of '56 was proud to mention him as one of our graduates. My thoughts and prayers are with you at a time when that is all we can provide.

I was saddened to hear of Dick's passing! He was a friend, colleague, confidant, and my "Boss". And was Principal for my 3 (now adult) children. Dick took his job seriously, but always had time to give a pat on the back, share a funny story, and see the bright side of a difficult situation. He loved the kids ...and made them his priority! But he never forgot his staff! Discussing the loss of Dick with a number of his former teachers over the past couple days, I have heard repeatedly...he respected us and always supported us! We could always count on him. That was Dick Steele and what made him a standout Principal. Strongly supported faculty make for effective teachers...we ...his teachers and the kids owe much to Dick's leadership! Thank you, Dick Steele!!

It is with deep sadness that I read of Dick's passing. Although my primary and secondary school years were spent in Weymouth schools, it was not until I was a university student that I had the privilege of being under Dick's administration. I elected to complete my professional practicum at East Jr. while he was principal. Moreover, I was delighted when he recommended me to a Title I position at his school upon my graduation from university. Two years later, with his recommendation and blessings, I left East Jr. for a classroom of my own at South Jr. However, little did either of us know that in a few years we would be together at South High. His professionalism, dedication, and concern for the well being of his students and staff are what I remembered when I left Massachusetts (as a casualty of Prop 2 1/2) to spend the rest of my teaching career in Down East Maine. My condolences to the family. May your warm memories of times together and faith offer comfort.

This is very sad news for me. Dick was the Assistant Principal at the Weymouth High School Annex/East Junior (Abigail Adams School) when I was there in 1967/68. He was a great guy and will be missed by all who knew him. Prayers for him tonight.

As a lifetime resident of Weymouth, I became friendly with Dick Steele for many years through sports as he was an avid sports fan, particulary basketball. He used to attend Legion Baseball games when I was coaching because his son "Dick" Jr. had many friends who played on our team who were like family to him. He was a genuine and regular all around person. As an educator, I know first hand from people, including former students, that had the utmost respect for Mr. Steele. One of his closest friends as an educator, was Ray "Tom" Granai, who was a vice principal for "Dick" , and also a life time friend of mine since first grade at the Hunt School thru high school and are still friends to this day. My sincere condolences go out to the Steele family

Dick was my principal for several years, but he also became a good friend. I have many memories of good times spent with him. After the school burned down and we went on double sessions at Central Junior High, Dick, Jack Green ( another teacher at the school ) and I would often drive into Boston roam about the city. Happy memories!!

To the Steele Family, I was a student of Mr. Steele's going way back to the 1960/61 school year. This must have been his first year teaching as he was my History teacher that year! I remember him as a good looking, quiet, reserved man and an Excellent teacher! He was someone who inspired me to become a teacher myself. I am so sorry for your loss!

Dear Steele Family, Susan and I want to extend our condolences on the loss of your father, to the community - one of the best and committed leaders we ever knew. I've often thought that school administrators get lost when it comes to credit. Everyone always speaks about the special teacher in their life, which I have had many, but we forget that there was an administrator that hired and mentored that teacher. Dick Steele was certainly one of those people who helped change many lives for the better. I know he helped change mine.

"Mr. Steele" was our safe place in a new school as our family was moved from Pennsylvania to Weymouth in the middle 60's. We were confused and fearful of this whole new life....Mr. Steele took time to help ease our path.

Back in September of 1971, I was all of eight days into my teaching career when my school, East Junior High, was destroyed in a fire. It was a devastating eventā€”books and equipment destroyed, records and schedules ruined, all sense of normalcy completely gone. I will never forget watching, in awe, Dick Steeleā€”then just a young man himselfā€”working tirelessly as principal to reconstruct East Junior as a kind of makeshift school on double sessions in the Central Junior High building. In spite of the incredible chaos, Dick managed to establish a functional, smoothly run school for the three years of double sessions at Central. It was a truly amazing accomplishment on his part, one for which the town of Weymouth should be eternally grateful. Over my thirty-five years as a teacher, I often thought of Dickā€™s tremendous work during that difficult time. I was also very fortunate, both early and later in my career, to work under Dickā€™s skilled leadership. He inspired me in many waysā€”a wonderful leader, a wonderful educator, and a wonderful friend. I feel very privileged to have known him.

I met Dick in 1961 when he started teaching in Weymouth, one year after I did, and we remained friends and colleagues for many years until our retirements. David and Robin were studens of mine as well. One of the nicest people you could ever know, a great friend and a good boss. We saw each other for a few years after retirement but then, as it happens we drifted apart. My thoughts go out to all the family.

I just want to say how truly sorry I am to Hear of MR. STEELE passing, o graduated from the Weymouth High School in 1997 , I never thought I would graduate , I was constantly in trouble . It seemed every weekend was the police , and when I was at school it Was MR. STEELE! It was 1995 and MR. MAZZOLA AND MR. STEELE called me down to the office, they said was going to be expelled , or I could get my 1000th chance and go to The ew Alternative School , When I showed up it was myself , 3 other boys and , and a girl ! I was like this is great! It didnā€™t take long to figure out the teachers were there to help us ! My twin Brother and I became the first students to graduate from the program ! I got called again to the hos office , but this time it was different , he shook my hand and told me he wanted to retire a year ago , but he had a mission to see my brother and I graduate ! I owe a lot to him and to Mr. MAZZOLA the two of them never quit , I know they are proud of the men we both became ! Because they told us ! So Thankyou Mr. Steele , you did impact us , and did see it through! Rest easy to a great mentor and friend!
