We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family at this difficult time. We have to put our Trust and Faith in God and should try to remember that while he has gone from here and left loved ones in sorrow, all of his pain, battles and suffering are over. Richard is whole and happy in the arms of our Father in Heaven along with Mom & Dad and the loved ones who have gone before him to welcome him home. Look to the sky to find the star God has created in his honor. May you be able to look for that star and know that Richard is happy and whole and watching over you from Heaven. May you find comfort in knowing that you can speak to him from your heart and that he will be listening. May you find solace in the good times and memories made and shared. May your memories bring you Peace, Comfort and Strength. God bless you All.

His parents named him Richard James Desmond. Mine named me James Christopher Desmond. (“James” to honor our fathers' brother, James, who fought in the Pacific theater in WWII). We were also the same age. But our paths rarely crossed (he grew up in Boston, I in Long Island), and when our families met there was a huge gaggle of kids to get to know, so the chance to get to know him on a deeper level was limited. But Richard’s dad, Joe, was the prototypically happy dad who loved children, was loved by them, and made you laugh just being around him. I once kiddingly mistook Uncle Joe for the Mayor of Boston. He had that sort of natural charisma – you automatically felt a family-level kinship with him, blood-connection or not. Richard carried on that legacy from Joe, and his infectiously kind and joyful mom, Eleanor. I guess that explains why he somehow made me think of Ringo Starr the few times I was around him. It was his innate sense of fun, and indefatigable zest for life. You could see it in his face – like he was about to go on tour with a great band and grab all the "Oh, yeah. . . ." moments. You just knew that, whatever he did for a living, he would reach true success – merely by mastering the simple joy and happiness of living itself. Of running your life rather than let it run you. That’s the true “Desmond spirit,” I concluded, and you can sense that in his surviving kin: The same engaging smile, and that sunshiny, joie de vivre gleam in their eyes. It no doubt enabled Richard to face down gargantuan-level health problems like a man, and go out like a man. It's been said that our legacies are engraved in the hearts and minds of others, not tombstones. That’s how we live on, advance civilization, and leave our contribution. It’s why, Cuz, you will never be forgotten.
