Walter Joseph McCarthy, Jr.

Walter Joseph McCarthy, Jr., of Fort Pierce, Florida and formerly of Quincy, Massachusetts, died peacefully on Monday, September 13, 2021, he was 84. Born in Boston on February 13, 1937, he was the son of the late Walter J. McCarthy Sr. and Bridget (Carter) McCarthy. He was raised in Quincy, attended local schools, and graduated from North Quincy High School with the Class of 1955. Following graduation, Walter continued his education at Bentley University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Walter had a rewarding and fruitful career with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a personnel director for the Department of Revenue. After 30 years of dedicated service, Walter retired in 1992 to pursue other interests and spend time with his family.

The most important part of Walter’s life was spending time with those he loved. An amazingly generous, caring, and selfless man, there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his family and friends.

Walter was a man of great faith and an active communicant of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was an active life member of the Knights of Columbus and a regular volunteer of the local community food bank. In his spare time, Walter liked to travel around the world to visit his children and experience different cultures. He enjoyed boating around New England and was the proud owner of the vessels: “Princess Carolyn” and “The Deep End”. Walter was a life member of the Dorchester Yacht Club as well as a Past Commodore.

Walter was the beloved husband of the late Carolyn (Hughes) McCarthy, who died in 2018. The two married on June 13, 1959, and together they shared 59 loving years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Kelly McCarthy-Prada and her late husband Robert of St. Augustine, FL, Stephen McCarthy and his former wife Beatriz of Madrid, Spain, Peter McCarthy and his wife Colleen of Arlington, MA, Kathleen McCarthy of Cincinnati, OH, Dennis McCarthy and his wife Jodi of Saco, ME, and the late W. Joseph McCarthy III, who died in 2012. Walter was the loving grandfather of thirteen, and the loving great grandfather of eleven. He was the dear brother of Eileen Fino and Margaret Macie. Walter is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Walter’s funeral services and interment will be held privately in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Randolph, Massachusetts.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, Ft. Pierce, Florida on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at 10:30AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Walter’s name to Moffitt Cancer Center, 12902 Magnolia Dr., Tampa, FL 33612.
