Robert M. O’Shaughnessy

Robert M. O’Shaughnessy, of Hingham, and formerly of Buffalo, New York and Centerville, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on October 12, 2018 at the age of 80.

Born in Buffalo, New York, he was the son of the late Francis M. and Julanne V. (Rosinski) O’Shaughnessy. Robert graduated from Saint Joseph’s Collegiate Institute of Buffalo, with the Class of 1955. Following high school, Robert went right to work, beginning his career in Banking. Robert simultaneously served in the Army Reserves.

Robert spent his career working in international and retail banking. This afforded him the opportunity to travel around the world. While working full time, Robert continued his education and completed an undergraduate degree from the University of Buffalo. He later obtained an advanced degree in Banking from the University of Wisconsin.

Robert had an great influence on the future of banking technology. His family remember him telling them about the future of ATM’s, what they were and how in the near future customers would have the ability to get cash from the bank any time of day without stepping foot into the bank branch.

Robert had a long and rewarding career with Marine Midland Bank and subsidiary of HSBC Bank. After 37 years of service, Robert retired in 1992. In his retirement, Robert was able to do the things he enjoyed while sharing his experiences with friends and family.

Robert had a great sense of humor and was known for his practical jokes. His neighbors soon learned who was putting the toilets or pink flamingos on their lawn at night. Robert also bestowed nicknames as a sign of affection to his friends and family throughout his life. Typically they stuck for life. He enjoyed the familial atmosphere that was built around him.

During his banking career, Robert taught courses in banking to students in higher education. He loved sharing his chosen profession with future bankers. Robert was a volunteer firefighter as well as the treasurer of The Regals Hockey Team in Buffalo, New York. At home, Robert loved to clean. Friends and family affectionately referred to him as “Mr. Clean”.  When Robert took the time to relax, he would enjoy watching baseball or football games.

A man of great faith, Robert had a special devotion to Our Lady as he prayed his Rosary everyday. He was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Victory Parish in Centerville. Robert was an usher at church and would assist on Sundays. He lived his life in accordance with the Christian values: faith, hope and love. Robert raised his family with love and instilled with devotion, values and morals.

Robert was a humble, intelligent, hard working and articulate man. If you asked him what he was most proud of, his answer would be, “I’m proud of my children.” Robert worked hard to provide for his family. He put all his children through college and helped his family whenever they needed it. Robert was known for giving thanks to God for the blessings in his life. He always said that, “He was blessed, because his children did so well”.  Robert’s legacy continues through his children and grandchildren. He will be missed by all the lives he touched.

Robert was the beloved husband of Sandra  J. (Anderson) O’Shaughnessy. The two married on August 4, 1962 in Buffalo, New York. Together they shared 56 loving years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Susan E.O. Hirsch and her husband Peter of York, Maine, Mark R. O’Shaughnessy and his wife Jane of Lockport, New York, Julie A. O’Shaughnessy and her husband Mike of Kennebunk, Maine and Jill F. O’Shaughnessy of Norwalk, Connecticut. Robert was the loving grandfather of  Margaret E. Seidenberg of Connecticut, Conall R. Hirsch of Maine, Phoebe K. Seidenberg of Connecticut, Meghan M. Hirsch of Maine, Sean P. O’Shaughnessy of New York, and Lillian M. Seidenberg of Connecticut. He was the dear brother of Dianne F. Marini and her late husband Al of Buffalo, New York.

A Memorial Service is being scheduled in December.
