Rita M. Newcomb

Newcomb, Rita M. Gibbons (Roberts) of Quincy, died peacefully on February 19, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was 94 years old.

Rita worked in the Kiddie Products office for many years, and at Simply Silver in the South Shore Plaza.  She was a volunteer election poll registrar and through her volunteer work at the Quincy Department of Public Works helped inaugurate Quincy’s Recycling program.  Rita was a lifelong resident of Quincy, 1940 graduate of North Quincy High School and as a young widow raised eight children. A wise woman, she was always available to offer counsel to her children, with the aid of a memory capable of recalling decades worth of facts.  Rita was a reliable presence at school plays, games, graduations and concerts, and seemed to have a never ending supply of lollipops for the little ones.  Always dressed to impress, Rita was always well coordinated from head to toe, with accessories to match. She was truly a hot ticket, with a plethora of sassy quips.  She loved a high stakes bingo game. An avid ceramics painter, Quincy’s garden gnome population mushroomed thanks to Rita.

Beloved wife of the late Wilbert Gibbons and the late John Newcomb.  Loving mother of Diane Loud of FL, Linda Schofield, Ann Johnson, Michael Gibbons, James Gibbons, Robert Gibbons, all of Quincy, Rita Kipp of Abington and Richard Gibbons of Kingston. Survived by many loving sons-in-law and daughters-in-law. Devoted grandmother of 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.  Caring sister of Edward Roberts of NH and Frank Roberts of MD. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Services will be private. Family and friends are cordially invited to a celebration of life at the Quarry Room of The Elks Lodge, 254 Quarry Street, Quincy, Massachusetts on Thursday, February 25 from 6PM to 9PM.

In Lieu of Flowers, donations in memory of Rita may be made to BeatNB Cancer Foundation, PO BOX 850804, Braintree, MA 02185.
