Michael E. Goldsmith

Goldsmith, Michael Edwin, age 73 of Hingham, formerly of Easton, passed away peacefully at the Pat Roche Hospice House in Hingham on February 6, 2016 after a lengthy two decade battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Husband, father, grandfather, colleague, teacher, mentor, and friend.  Beloved husband of 50 years of Suzanne (Lowndes).  Loving father and grandfather of Kathleen Griffin and her husband James of Cohasset and their children Catherine, Elizabeth, Anne, and Mary Claire; Maura Bookter and her husband Trek of Columbia, MD, and their children Sarah and Christopher; and Caitlin Lawrence and her husband John of Silver Spring, MD, and their children Charlotte and Samuel.  Loving brother of Carole (Goldsmith) Brown and her husband Timothy of Cheektowaga, NY, Diane (Goldsmith) McLaughlin and her husband Daniel of Snyder, NY, and the late James L. Goldsmith.  He was the brother-in-law of the late Karen Lowndes Fulcher and Wally Fulcher of Easton.  He also is survived by his nieces and nephews Laurie Slawson and Sherrie Slawson of Buffalo; Shawn McLaughlin of Amherst, NY; Shannon McLaughlin Ragonnet of Los Angeles; and Lisa Fulcher McKenna of Easton.

Mike was born in Buffalo on January 21, 1943, the son of Herbert Edwin and Annette (Robinson) Goldsmith, and grew up there surrounded by his extended family.  Mike graduated from Canisius College in 1964, and initially interested in a career as a college professor, entered the graduate program in sociology at the University of Massachusetts.   During the same time, he met and married Suzanne, and after the birth of their first child, Kathleen, he left graduate school and joined the Department of the Navy.  Mike enjoyed a long and successful career as a Training Program Manager with the US Government’s Office of Personnel Management, and then later at Northeastern University.   He also taught for many years as an adjunct professor at Stonehill College, Suffolk University and Northeastern.  Always a student, Mike earned his MBA in the evening program at Boston College.  One of the highlights of his career was living with his family and working in Germany during 1987-1990, when he and Suzanne traveled extensively through Europe, and Maura and Caitlin were able to study in Germany.

After raising their family in Easton, Mike and Suzanne moved to Middleborough and then to Bluffton, South Carolina, where they enjoyed six years of retirement in the Hilton Head area.  Later they moved to Virginia and then recently moved back to the Boston area and settled into a routine with old friends from Easton and new friends at Linden Ponds.

Mike was both a film and history buff and loved to travel in the US and abroad.  He was generous with his time and while he volunteered throughout his life, his time as an early and active volunteer at My Brother’s Keeper in Easton was dear to his heart.  Most especially, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, including being well-loved “Boppa” to his eight grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, February 13 at 11 a.m. Church of the Resurrection, 1057 Main Street, Hingham.  Visiting hours on Friday, February 12 from 3-7pm at the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St, Hingham.  Burial will be private.
