Marie Therese Darcy

Darcy, Marie Therese (Phelan) of Braintree, formerly of South Weymouth, died March 3, 2019 at the age of 92.

Marie was born in Dorchester, MA to Arthur and Mary Esther (Buckley) Phelan along with her older brother Arthur Phelan Jr.   She was raised in Dorchester and attended St. Matthews elementary school and St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

She and her late husband, Robert (Bob) Darcy raised their three daughters, the late Linda Ayers (and her husband Gerald of NC), Jeanne Rigney (and her husband Daniel of Marshfield), and the late Susan Campbell of Taunton in South Weymouth, MA.   In addition to Jeanne, she is also survived by 7 grandchildren Michael Rigney (and his wife Amy), Paul Ayers (and his wife Simone), Caryn Jackson (and her husband Bill), Lauren Johnson (and her husband Ed), Katherine Robinson, Kevin Robinson (and his wife Dominique), and Jeff Rigney.  She is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Marie and Bob were married 54 years before his passing in 2001.  They shared a rare love story which technically began at their baptism in 1926 since they were born just four days apart, however, they began dating at 14 years old.

Marie attended Boston schools, before eventually settling in South Weymouth to raise her family.  She then moved to Braintree where she and Bob spent their retirement years, spending winters in Naples Florida with their large group of school classmates “the club” who became lifelong friends.

Marie volunteered at South Shore Hospital from 1966-2010.  Marie enjoyed traveling which she did plenty of as Bob traveled internationally for work and in retirement as well.  She was a deeply religious Catholic who took everything in stride and believed that “we don’t have control over it, so we can’t worry about it.”  She faced many challenges in life through the early loss of both of her parents and two of her daughters, but her faith kept her at peace.  To meet Marie, you would not know because she did not believe in “bothering” people.  She prayed and mourned privately.   Marie truly epitomized strength and courage.   She was kind, thoughtful, and loved her family.   She was also very intelligent and quick witted, however, you wouldn’t know her wit unless you stood close by because she never made herself the center of attention.    Easter was her favorite holiday.  She and Bob always enjoyed hosting Easter Sunday and having an egg hunt for their grandchildren. Marie enjoyed golfing, especially in her retirement years.  She and Bob golfed and enjoyed watching golf as well.  Marie also loved humor and puns, which she often cut from the newspaper in addition to doing her crossword puzzles.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9 AM on Saturday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Braintree at 10 AM. Burial in Braintree Cemetery, Braintree.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations toward the purchase of a service dog for Marie’s great grandson Lucas Ayers, who suffers from complications from epilepsy and childhood cancer treatment.  Send donations to Lucas Ayers, P.O. Box 713, Marion, MA 02738.
