John S. “Steve” Sanford

John S. “Steve” Sanford, a longtime resident of Hingham, formerly of Brookline, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023.  He was 76.

He was born in Boston to Mary C. (Murray) and John C. Sanford and raised in Brighton. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, Steve went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in history at UMASS Boston.  After college, Steve worked with Purity Supreme for a while until he earned a position as a letter carrier with the USPS.  He worked as a letter carrier for over 20 years before retiring.

Steve was a history buff and avid reader.  His home library was a constant form of entertainment and education.  When he wasn’t at home reading, you could find him frequenting the Hingham Public Library.  He enjoyed trips to the movie theater but was always a fan of the classic films.  Steve always loved sports and was a devoted fan of the Boston Celtics.  He was soft spoken but could talk with you for hours if it was about sports or history.  He adored his nieces and nephews and gladly took up any opportunity to spend time with them.  Often taking them to the Science Museum for some fun and an opportunity to learn.

He hand wrote cards to family and friends for every occasion.  Steve was thoughtful, gentle and caring and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Loving brother of William Sanford and his wife Eleanor of Hingham.  Cherished uncle to Jennifer Buchanan, her husband Gregory and their three children, Mae, Will and Ethan, all of Hanover, William Sanford Jr and his husband Jason of Stow, Holly Rojas, her husband Oscar and their child, Lorenzo of Hingham and Jaclyn Sanford of Hingham.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the graveside service on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at 10 AM at New Calvary Cemetery, Boston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve’s name to the Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt Street, Hingham, MA, 02043.
