John Robert “Bob” McGrory

John Robert (Bob) McGrory, of South Weymouth, MA, died on April 17, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on April 8, 1925 and is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jeanne (Davis).  He was predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen McGrory (2011) and survived by his son, Jack McGrory and his wife Una of La Jolla, CA; and daughters, Patty Gilligan and her husband Kevin of Edina, MN; Meg Kelleher and her husband Patrick of Marshfield, MA; Nancy Altimonte and her husband Paul of Pembroke, MA; and his sister Mary Patricia Kelley of South Weymouth, MA. Bob (Grampy, PopPop, Bobby, Grandpa) is also survived by fourteen adoring grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Bob was born and raised in South Weymouth, MA and grew up during the Great Depression. He lost his father when he was eight and at the age of 17, enlisted in the Army after his junior year in high school. He trained in Texas and was assigned to the 139th Regiment which was incorporated into General Douglas MacArthur’s 41st Army serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He fought in seven combat campaigns including New Guinea, Biak and the Philippines. He was in the lead battalion to land in Japan following the bombs and the Japanese surrender. In 1946 he returned from the war and two years later married his childhood sweetheart, Jeanne Davis. They have enjoyed 68 years of a loving marriage.  After the war, Bob achieved his GED and received an Associates college degree. He made a career at the Massachusetts Electric Company and in post-retirement worked at AAA and the South Weymouth Savings Bank. Bob loved his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings and extended family, but above all, he loved his wife Jeanne.  He felt blessed to have lived a rich life filled with much love and many, many good times. He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 8:45 AM on Friday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 9:30 AM. Burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Weymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob’s memory to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
