Jean C. Grant-Henderson

Private Service

In the evening of December 3, 2018, Jean Grant-Henderson of Weymouth passed away peacefully after an eleven year mental decline and valiant physical struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Jean was 93.

Born in Quincy, MA on March 26, 1925, Jean was raised in Wollaston not far from Wollaston Beach where her love of swimming and the sea began. She was the second child of the late Thelma (Boles)Anderson and Harry W. Anderson. Jean is pre-deceased by her sister, Priscilla Hall and her brother, Alan Anderson.

Jean grew up in the Great Depression and lived through WWII. At the age of 18, she entered the government’s Nurse Cadet Program, created during wartime to provide needed nurses. She graduated from the former Quincy City Hospital Nursing School in 1947 as an RN and, at the age of 21, had the start of a lifelong career, one she was deeply proud of.

A realistic, strong individual with deep empathy for others, she desired to be a nurse from a young age having watched her mother care for her father during a long illness. She worked as an RN until the age of 80. A complete professional yet deeply caring, Jean was an excellent nurse.

Jean married Daryl L. Grant in 1950 with whom she had four children. Daryl died in 1971. Upon his death, she returned to college, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Emmanuel College.

In 1988, she married Sheldon Henderson who passed away in 2004.

Jean was a positive, outgoing, fun person, always looking forward to the next day with enthusiasm and curiosity even into her disease, her favorite expression, “I don’t want to miss anything”. She loved people, and was deeply devoted to family. She gardened, knitted, painted, braided rugs and loved to laugh. She was a survivor and an inspiration.

In 2007, Jean was formally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Jean is survived by her children: Todd Grant of Ann Arbor, MI and his wife Anne, Jeanette Grant of Weymouth, Peter Grant of Cheshire, CT, and Anita Grant-King of Daytona Beach, Florida and her husband Mark; four grandchildren, Alexander Grant of Florida and his wife Stephanie , Daniel Grant of California, David Grant and Andrew Grant of Michigan.

She is survived by three sister in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. Well, remembered by all with love and laughter.

Funeral services are private. Please give to the Alzheimer’s Association to help in finding a cause and cure for this cruel disease.
