James Michael Manning

James Michael Manning, 74, passed away on April 29, 2015 after a brief illness at his home in Norwell, MA. He was born on September 29, 1940 in Boston, MA to Thomas and Mary (Conroy) Manning, of Clifden, County Galway, Ireland.

 Jim grew up in Boston (Dorchester), MA. He graduated from Don Bosco High School. After high school he joined the Marine Corps achieving the rank of corporal.

 An electrical engineer by trade he worked for Xerox for over 30 years.

 Jim married Dian (Sturtevant) in 1964 in Quincy, MA. They were happily married for 50 years. Jim loved to teach and was happiest when he was passing on his vast knowledge in every subject to his family. Whether it was teaching his daughters to play ice hockey or to change a tire on a car or wire up electrical circuits, Jim never missed an opportunity to teach you how to do something new. He was an amazing hockey coach and helped lead his daughters and their teammates to championships on the conference, national, collegiate and world levels. He was an award-winning singer in his youth and a lover of all types of music. He was an extraordinarily proud American and Marine veteran and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

 Jim was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Mary and sisters Mary Louise Manning and Maureen (Phillip) Whitcher.

 Jim is survived by his wife Dian; his daughters Patricia “Pam” Manning of Hanover, Deborah Murray of Hanson, and Lynn (Sean) Moynihan of Hingham; his brothers/sisters Thomas (Claire) Manning Jr. of Walpole, John (Patricia) Manning of Brockton, Margaret Mayo of Randolph, Elizabeth “Jeannie” Hernon of Dorchester, Kathleen Pimental of Quincy, and Dorothy (Richard) Pasquale of Abington; his grandchildren Samantha Manning Tedeschi and Melissa Murray of Hanson, Jacquilyn, Christopher, Daniel, and Benjamin Manning of Hanover, Maeve and Declan Moynihan of Hingham; and many devoted nieces, nephews and other relatives.

 Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Tuesday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rt. 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at Wednesday at 8:00 AM  prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Helen’s Church, Norwell at 9:00 AM. Burial will follow in Washington Street Cemetery, Norwell. 

 In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Marine Corps Heritage Foundation P.O. Box 96628, Washington DC 20090.
