James J. McGurl, Jr.

McGurl, James J., Jr. of Hingham, formerly of Squantum, died September 23, 2016 at 87 due to complications with pneumonia.  

James proudly served in the U.S. Army as a high speed radio operator during the Korean War. He attended Massachusetts College of Art and the Boston Architectural Center and was a noted local artist and muralist. His work adorns many churches, restaurants, and public buildings throughout the Northeast. James was a talented musician who enjoyed playing the piano and also gardening. He loved spending time with and helping his family. He was particularly proud of his grandchildren, and loved to entertain them with his wonderful sense of humor and all sorts of imaginative projects. James was a kind man full of peace and compassion and he generously volunteered his time to help others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. 

Beloved husband of Evangeline (Johnston) McGurl of Hingham. Loving father of Kevin, Joseph, and Michael McGurl and Beth Cronin, Maria Phillips, and the late James McGurl III. Cherished brother of Anne Naff. Also survived by 11 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and close family friend Linda Ivers. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Saturday 2:30-3:45 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY followed by a funeral home service at 3:45 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of James may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004.
