Gerard J. Ryan

Gerard “Gerry” John Ryan, of Holbrook, formerly of Charlestown, passed peacefully at the age of 77 on June 7, 2022. He was the first born of eight to Luke and Agnes Ryan on August 18, 1944 in Dublin, Ireland.

Gerry’s first employment was as an apprentice cabinet maker and during this time he took a liking to music. He became a brilliant musician who internationally traveled and toured playing bass and guitar. In the beginning, he didn’t have much money to buy a guitar or bass, but being the determined person he was, he set out and made one for himself, as well as the others in the band that he later formed. After finishing his trade apprenticeship, his passion and talent for music took him to Germany, Mexico, USA, UK and Ireland backing some famous artists such as Roy Orbison, Matt Munro, Dick Emery, The Bachelors and Cat Stevens to name a few.

He then returned to settle down in Dublin where he got married and had his son, Barry. In 1984, Gerry moved to the US with his family and returned to his trade which was to be his final offering as a skilled carpenter. Gerry had a love for grilling, entertaining and playing his cherished guitars for all audiences. His love of music was a gift to everyone that met him. All through his life he spoke so well of all the people and great friends he made throughout his career. He had also spoke very highly of the medical staff who cared for him while in the hospitals and clinics.

Gerry’s charm and charisma will be dearly missed. He is survived by his son, Barry Ryan and his wife, Elizabeth. His treasured granddaughter, Gianna Ryan and his former wife, Maria Ryan. All of his beloved brothers and sisters; Louis, Rita, Cora, Linda, Cathy, Francis and the late Joan. Gerry will also be missed by many nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones.

From everyone in Dublin a great big thank you for all that were there for Gerry when he needed help. We greatly appreciate it.

Services will be held on Thursday June 23, 2022 from 4-8pm at McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, 809 Main St. Weymouth, MA. 02190. Following the services, all are invited to join family and friends for a celebration of life at Donahue’s Pub 783 S.Franklin St, Holbrook, MA. 02343.  A special word of thanks to the management, staff and patrons of Donahue’s Pub, his final watering hole.

In lieu of flowers, have a pint for Gerry. Sláinte!
