George Q. Cully, Jr.

George Q. Cully, Jr was born 1/27/28 in Queens, NY; the oldest of 5 boys to George Q. Cully, Sr. and Miriam Traynor Cully.

George’s youth was largely spent on the coast of Maine. He left high school to join the Navy during WWII. The Heavy Cruiser USS Helena was home for the duration of the war. Upon returning home he graduated from Whitman High School, Whitman, MA, in 1947.

In 1952, George married Helen A. Byrne, with whom he had 5 boys. Settling in Quincy, MA, George began a career in the high risk insurance business. He became a high-ranking executive in many companies and was President of New England Risk Specialists.

Following Helen’s death in 1968, George met and married Aili Cully (Aho). Aili brought 2 children to the marriage and then they had a daughter together. George now had 8 “TV Channel Changers” & could generally remember their names after running through most of them.

George & Aili loved Cape Cod and built a home in Orleans. Boating, sailing, and trips onto Nauset beach were favorite activities. Eventually they retired there. For many more years, George went on to serve the Towns of Orleans and Eastham, MA, as Assistant Harbormaster, Wharfinger, and Shellfish Constable.

George was a past President of the MBBA (Mass Beach Buggy Assoc.) a beach conservation and access group of fishing enthusiasts. He helped organize, manage, and supervise many beach reclamation projects during his involvement.

George was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Gerald and Eugene Cully, his wife Helen, and one grandchild. He is survived by his wife Aili (Aho) Cully and his children Michael Cully, Timothy Cully, Kevin Cully, Christopher Cully, Edmund Cully, John Behan, Jr., Kathleen Behan-Roche, & Maureen Cully Walker. George also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren as well as his brother John Cully and wife Judy, and brother Jim Cully and wife Nancy.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Funeral home service will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 AM.  Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to the South Shore Hospital Hospice VNA.
