Father Arthur M. Calter

Father Calter, Arthur M. of Boston, passed away April 16, 2017.  

Father Calter was born in Brookline. He attended St. Bonaventure and St. John’s Seminary in Brighton. He served as a parish priest in Braintree, Needham, and Milton before joining the Army in 1966.  He served for 10 years as an Army Chaplain, including 2 years in Vietnam. Father Calter received 3 Bronze Stars amongst other citations for his service as an Army Chaplain. Father Calter was well known for his 61 years of priesthood, being assigned to many different parishes, including Immaculate Conception in Marlboro, Our Lady’s Collaborative in Newton, St. Mark’s Church in Dorchester, St. Bartholomew in Needham, St Augustine’s Church in South Boston. More recently he was a Pastor at Resurrection Church in Hingham before being a Senior Priest in Residence at St. Ann’s Church in Neponset and St. Ann’s Church in Wollaston. He loved his faith and his role as a Parish Priest- helping, guiding, counseling, connecting, and inspiring others. He loved music, playing the piano and enjoyed playing tennis. He will be sadly missed.

Son of the late Thomas J. and Catherine (McMorrow) Calter. Brother to the late Rev. John T. Calter, Rev. William F. Calter, Thomas J. Calter and Catherine Carrigg. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, and many grand nieces and nephews.

A prayer service will be held at 4PM on Thursday by Bishop Dooher at Resurrection Church in Hingham followed by a visitation until 8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 11AM at Resurrection Church in Hingham. Burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Fr. Art may be made to Regina Cleri Residence, 60 William Cardinal O’Connell Way, Boston, MA 02114.
