Ellen Elizabeth (Johnson) (Hurley) Shutt, of Hingham, died May 19, 2017, at the Harbor House in Hingham, where she had been a patient for nine years.

Ellen was born October 30, 1934 in Woodsville, NH, the daughter of William and Leona Johnson. After attending Woodsville schools, she entered Quincy City Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her RN in 1955. She worked as a nurse at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Dorchester, and also at Quincy Hospital. She was a school nurse for Hull Public Schools and then worked at Ocean Manor (now Life Care Center of the South Shore) in Scituate before retiring in 1989.

Loving wife of the late Melville Shutt, Ellen was the beloved mother of Stephen Hurley and his wife, Terry, of Hingham and Daniel Hurley of Quincy. She is also survive by her much loved grandchildren, Colleeen Hurley of Rapid City, SD and Vincent Hurley of Hingham, her sister Ruth Berggren of Hingham, and her nephews, Karl Berggren of Weymouth and William Berggren of Plymouth.

Ellen’s family would like to thank the staff of the Harbor House for the nine years of loving and compassionate care that they gave to Ellen.

Services will be held at a later date and will be private.

In Lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Activities Department of Harbor House at 11 Condito Road, Hingham, MA 02043.
