Veteran

Donald W. McGilvray

Donald William McGilvray 5-1-31 – 9-16-16.

Donald McGilvray of Squantum, passed away on 9-16-16, while living in Westminster, MD with his son Neil and his partner Victoria McSwain. Beloved husband of the late Nancy Ann McGilvray, the son of the late Grace V. McGilvray and the late Daniel W. McGilvray of North Quincy.

Affectionately known as Don by close friends and family. Don was a retired carpenter with Local 40, out of Cambridge, MA. He was an avid sailor, life member and three time past Commodore of Squantum Yacht Club. He was also a Member of the Commodores Club of America. Don served in the Navy during the Korean War on the USS Goodrich (DDR-831) escort for the Aircraft Carrier Midway.

Most of all Don enjoyed the simple pleasures of family and friends. He was a surrogate father, friend, and mentor to many.  Age and gender were irrelevant to Don, as he assessed people by their character. He had a knack of knowing instinctually if you had a good heart. If you passed his initial test, you had a friend for life.

Don is survived by his four children; Neil McGilvray of Westminster, MD. Elise Collagan of Marblehead, MA, Bryan  and Jean McGilvray of Plymouth, MA and Christine McGilvray of Marblehead, MA. Cherished Grandfather to 14 grandchildren- Stuart McGilvray, Ian Collagan and Kyle, Bryan, Casey, Torey, Gale, Elsa, Heidi, Wade, Ava, Audrey, Heath and Liam McGilvray.

Don will always be remembered as a soft spoken man, who exuded confidence, compassion, humility, integrity, strength and loyalty.
