William J. Ryan Jr., a longtime resident of Quincy, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. He was the second child born to William J. Ryan Sr. and Mary (Powell) Ryan. He was born November 26, 1952, in Boston, MA.
Following his birth “Bill”, found himself at home with the rest of his family in their home on Rockview Street in Jamaica Plain. This is where he was first introduced to his dear sister, Dottie, (Dorothy R Ryan, 1949-2016).
The Ryan family was growing and a new home was built on Adam’s Street in Quincy. Shortly after moving into the Adam’s Street home another sister joined the family, Judy, (Judith E Ryan - 1955). Judith currently resides in Ahwatukee, Arizona.
Bill attended Quincy Public Schools starting with Furnace Brook Elementary School. Bill was a good student, eager to learn, Bill, liked school and his teachers liked him and enjoyed having him in class. Bill advanced through the years and made his way to Central Junior High School. During his junior high years, Bill began to identify what interested him most, music-art and science.
Bill loved classical music and was a fan of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. He received recognition for block art prints he created and they were displayed at the corporate office of The Boston Globe. Bill learned to do stained glass and later taught that skill to adult students at the Elliot School in Jamaica Plain and in the Brookline adult education program.
Bill attended Quincy High School and graduated in 1971. While in High School Bill spent his summers doing research at the Massachusetts Biological Laboratory. Bill received his bachelor's degree from Boston University in 1975. During college and approximately 38 years beyond graduation Bill worked in Ophthalmology at University Hospital/Boston Medical center. Both inside and outside of work Bill was always known for being a kind, compassionate person. He was always ready to provide encouragement and service to his fellow man! He was there to offer his service wherever he could be of assistance.
Bill liked to keep busy and he liked being busy so until about a year ago when he health became compromised Bill was working at Home Depot in Watertown, MA.
Bill leaves behind, the love of his life, his angel on earth, Brenda,(Jenny) Ryan, his step-daughter, Michele Alvarez, who is a nurse and received her education through Bill's encouragement and guidance. Both Michele and Brenda took care of Bill during the last few years of Bill's life. He lives behind her extended family, whom he loved dearly. His sister Judy in Arizona and cousins, Rick Ryan of Needham, MA and Donna Ryan of Timonium, Maryland. Second cousins, Judy, Bob and Bobby Daley, all of Osterville, MA and Thomas O’Connor of Brockton.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visitation from 10:30AM—12PM on Thursday, 2/13/2025 at the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, QUINCY. Immediately following the visitation, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12 PM at the Keohane Funeral Home Burial at Mt. Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.
