William R. Handrahan

Handrahan, William R. of Hingham, died peacefully at Sunrise Assisted Living in Cohasset at age 90 on January 15, 2015 surrounded by family after a recent period of failing health. He was the last surviving child of the large Handrahan family of Hull, MA.

Bill attended and played football at Hingham High, Thayer Academy, and Ohio State University. He proudly enlisted and served as a PFC-Chief Gunner in WWII.  He bravely fought in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge, and traveled as a post war USO entertainer. He worked as a US Government employee for over 40 years. He was a long time member and volunteer of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and School including CCD, CYO, many fundraisers, and served as an usher. In the community, he volunteered his time for Habitat for Humanity. Bill was a lifelong lover of sports and was an outstanding athlete at football, baseball, softball, hockey, golf, and swimming. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, cooking, and was a lover of the ocean. A long time mentor, coach, manager, referee, he was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins.

His family was the center of his life. He always had a smile on his face, a song in his heart, and a whistle on his lips. Happy to share a joke, a story, and a laugh, he was a shining example of what a man can be.

Beloved husband of 63 years of Ann (Rogers) Handrahan. Father of Christine Schroeder and her husband Steve of Templeton, Michael Handrahan and his wife Gail of Weymouth, Jack Handrahan and his wife Lauren of Elmore, VT, Mark Handrahan and his wife Liz of Scituate, Patty Bean and her husband David of Sedro Woolley, WA, MaryBeth Logg and her husband John of Scituate, and Kate Nelson and her husband Kevin of Long Valley, NJ.
