William J. Mccahill Jr.

William Joseph McCahill, 90, of Hingham passed away peacefully on September 11, 2018.  He is now and forever reunited with his beloved Dorothy (Gannon) McCahill, to whom he was married for 63 years. Faith and family were the cornerstones of his life.

Bill was the proud patriarch of his large family. He was Dad to 7 children, Papa to 24 grandchildren, and Pop-Pop to 10 great-grandchildren.

The youngest of four children, Bill was born and raised in Beechurst, NY. In 1945, he graduated from Fordham Prep in the Bronx and enlisted in the Navy. After his Honorable Discharge, Bill attended Fordham University. Following his graduation in 1953, Bill and Dorothy were married and settled in Somerville, NJ where their 7 children were born. Bill began his 32-year career with Johnson & Johnson, starting at Ethicon in NJ.

In 1967, he was promoted to Treasurer and CFO of Codman & Shurtleff in Randolph, MA. The family then settled in Scituate. Bill was a 50-year member of Hatherly Country Club. In addition to golf and tennis, Bill enjoyed coaching his sons in CYO basketball.

Bill was very active in his parish communities (Immaculate Conception in NJ and St. Frances X. Cabrini in Scituate) as well as a 59-year member of the Elks Association.  He was named Elk of the Year in 1967 and elected to Life Time Membership in 1997.

Bill retired in 1987, and he and Dorothy spent the next 25 years wintering in Largo, FL where they were members of the Bayou Country Club. They cherished spending time with their ever-growing family.

Bill was the loving father of his children Nancy (John) Giamattei of Salem, MA, Susan (Paul) Kingston of Hingham, MA, Ed (Cindy) McCahill of Woodinville, WA, Kevin (Cindy) McCahill of Bedford, NH, Jean (Jay) Driscoll of Hingham, MA, Carolyn (Bryan) McKigney of Pleasantville, NY, and Marjorie (Paul) Mahoney of Norwell, MA.  He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his dear sister Marie Tintera of Largo, FL, his sister-in-law Joan Johnson of Southbury, CT, and many nieces and nephews. He was also the loving brother of the late John McCahill and Virginia Masset.

Bill was known for his sense of humor and quick wit. He was humble, generous and faith-filled. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
