William H. “Bill” Callahan Jr., of Hingham, died peacefully on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham. He was 78.
Born in Quincy on November 17, 1943, he was the son of the late William H. and Harriet (Libby) Callahan. Bill graduated from North Quincy High School in 1962. He was a standout defenseman for the Raiders hockey team and was voted Best Looking for his class – although he was sure his friends rigged the vote in his favor. After short stints at Pneumatic Scales and Gillette, Bill landed at Polaroid where he worked close to 40 years as a lead mechanic/technician. In addition, Bill spent 60 years with the Boston Bruins organization and later the NHL, starting as a locker room attendant before settling in as the long-time penalty box attendant for the visiting team.
Bill was the beloved husband of the late Janice (Williams) Callahan. He was the devoted father of Libby E. Callahan and her husband John, and the loving grandfather of Sean and Ryan, all of Hingham. Bill was the dear brother of the late Nancy Strout and is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 AM on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10 AM.
Services conclude with interment in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Hingham.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bill may be sent to Pat Roche Hospice Home, 86 Turkey Hill Ln., Hingham, MA 02043.
