William H. Berigan, Jr.

William H. “Bill” Berigan of Hingham passed away on November 4, 2018 in Hingham at the age 92.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Teresa (Monbouquette) Berigan. Bill is survived by his five children: Kathleen and her husband Phillip Avery of Cohasset, Pati and her husband Joe Egan of Hingham, Michelle Berigan of McKinney TX, John Berigan of Provincetown and Paul and his wife Pam of Hingham. Also survived by his grandchildren: Michael Egan (and wife Evy) of Simsbury, CT, Colby, Avery and Shea Berigan of Hingham, great granddaughter Maddie Egan, and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was the son of Catherine (Farrell) and William H. Berigan and was predeceased by his sister Betty (Thompson). Although born in Dorchester, he spent most of his childhood in Hanson, where he excelled in both academics and school sports. One of his proudest athletic achievements came when he played an integral part in winning the basketball state championship for Hanover High School in 1943. He also played baseball for many years, and he followed the Hingham High School teams and his beloved Red Sox passionately right up until that team recently won the World Series. He would often greet friends and family with an enthusiastic, “How about those Red Sox!”. Bill was a lifelong fisherman, and spent many happy hours along the banks of streams and rivers throughout the area. During most winters you could also find him skating on the local frozen ponds.

Bill entered Boston College in 1943 but his studies were interrupted when he decided to join the military as WWII continued to rage. As a member of the Army Air Corps, he performed a variety of duties, such as guarding officers captured in Italy and serving on a unit tasked with the safe disposal of poisonous gas. Following his tour of duty, he entered MaryKnoll Seminary in NJ and then Stonehill College, where he completed his degree in History (Cum Laude) as a member of its first graduating class in 1952.

Bill spent his entire working career in sales with various companies, most notably for MacMillan Publishing. He won numerous sales awards and international trips and was recognized as one of the top salesmen in the country for the company. He has always possessed a passion for books, a quality that no doubt led to his sales success in that industry. He loved to talk about the books he was currently reading, and the staff of the Hingham Public Library knew him well as one of their most loyal patrons.

Bill and Teresa moved to Hingham in 1958 and lived in the town for the next 60 years, primarily on Fairview Street, until moving to Lincoln Apartments. Along with Teresa, he was a devoted and faithful member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, where he taught CCD, was a member of the Holy Name Society, served on various committees and councils, fundraising events and church activities, and was a regular lector. He attended mass every day, and he will be greatly missed by the clergy and his many friends at St. Paul’s.
