William Franklin “Bill” Sweeney

William Franklin “Bill” “ Babe” Sweeney, born on August 4, 1939, passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021 after seven months of chronic cardiac disease and several other illnesses.  He was 82.

Born in Quincy to John J. Sweeney and Mary B. (Murphy) Sweeney.  The youngest of 6 children and the last surviving child.  He grew up in the Montclair section of North Quincy.  He was an All Scholastic Football player and graduated From NQHS in 1957.  In 2003 he was inducted into the Quincy/North Quincy High School Athletic Hall of Fame.  After graduating, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and proudly served until September 1960.  He later earned his Bachelor’s degree at Boston State College in 1976.  After retiring from the Boston Police Department as a Lieutenant Detective, he worked for HPSC.

Bill married Lorraine in 1962 and they raised 4 children in North Weymouth and later moved to Hingham in 2001.  He loved Football and Hockey, however being a family man, a much loved Dad and Grampy was most important to him.

Devoted husband of 59 years to Lorraine K. (Mullen).  Loving Father of Patrick D. Sweeney of Sharon, Timothy P. Sweeney and his wife Christine of Hanover, Laura E. Moran and her husband Charles of Holbrook, and the late Sean W. Sweeney.  Cherished Grampy to Patrick D. Sweeney, Jr., Karly Sweeney, Timothy Sweeney, Emily Sweeney, Lily Sweeney, Larissa Moran and Paul Moran.  Great Grandfather of Natasha, Patrick, Nina, and Lucas.  Also survived by many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his siblings: John J. Sweeney, Maj General Charles W. Sweeney, Marylyn Sweeney Burns, Arthur D. Sweeney and Paul W. Sweeney.

Bill’s services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bill may be made to Norwell Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061.
