Reid, William D., a lifelong resident of Hingham, died at the age of 89 at his home on December 4, 2015.
Bill was a graduate of Hingham High School, class of 1944. He proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He worked for over 30 years at Medford State Hospital as a dietician before retiring in 1987. Bill then went on to work another 20 years as a security officer at the commuter boat in Hingham.
Bill was passionate about his faith and his family. He was lovingly known as “Uncle Billy” to many beyond his immediate family. This was certainly the case with his long time friend Leah Roundtree and all of her family. Bill was an avid reader, storyteller and lover of movies. He also stayed physically active throughout his life. He could frequently been seen walking all around Hingham.
Bill put his faith into action in many ways, from speaking out on issues related to social justice and racial understanding, to supporting dozens of charitable causes, to his steadfast loyalty to the First Baptist Church in Hingham.
Uncle Billy was well loved by all who knew him, although he held a very special place in the hearts of his nephew Stephen’s family here in Hingham. In 2006 Uncle Billy became the patriarch of the family and helped to fill a void left by the loss that the family experienced after the death of Stephen & Barbara’s parents. Uncle Billy loved attending family functions, sharing history and stories of his early years. He was a vital and vibrant part of every get together. Stephen and his wife recall how he was immediately “Uncle Billy” to all of our extended family and friends! Although a very private man, he thoroughly enjoyed time spent at social get-togethers and was a great fan of home cooked meals! Uncle Billy was a true gentleman; he was kind, loving and incredibly independent. He truly lived life on his terms. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
