William Arthur “Art” Bingham

It is with deep regret that we mourn the passing of Art Bingham, of Hingham, MA, on Saturday, November 23.  Art passed away just three days short of his 90th birthday, after a brief illness.

He was a child of the depression, born in 1929 and raised in New Jersey, becoming a 1947 graduate of Westfield High School, then continuing on to Cornell University where he earned a degree in Economics in 1951.  Art joined the Navy after college, to fulfill his ROTC requirement, and served as a lieutenant aboard the USS Holder, before coming back stateside to the Pentagon.  Upon leaving the service in 1954, he married fellow Westfielder, Phyllis Antle, and over the following 7 years welcomed three children into the family.

For many years, Art worked for John Hancock Life Insurance Company, primarily in Silver Spring, Maryland and ending up at the home office in Boston.  Following his retirement in 1986, he continued to pursue a passion for travel, visiting Australia, Spain, Italy, Korea, China, and the Netherlands, among others.  He lived the rest of his life in Massachusetts, in North Andover, Martha’s Vineyard, and Hingham.

After 43 years of marriage ended with Phyllis’ death in 1997, Art was fortunate to meet another wonderful woman, Ann Miller Maley, with whom he shared his last 20 years.

He enjoyed golf and tennis, most any card game, and especially fishing which took him on trips to many different places, including Mexico, the Florida Keys, and a much-loved annual trip to Canada.  He will be greatly missed by his family – sons Bill (Lou Ann), Rick (Debbie), and John (Spring), and grandchildren Brianna, Brian, and Katie – along with his beloved Ann, and the many people he befriended throughout his life.

Funeral services and burial will be private. Cards may be sent to William Bingham, 19233 Autumn Woods Ave., Tampa FL, 33647. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Art may be sent to The Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA  22203.
