William A. Mercurio

William A. “Bill”  Mercurio, of Weymouth and Richmond, Indiana, passed away June 17, 2016. 

Born in Indiana, he was the son of the late William and Cleo (Griffey) Mercurio.  Beloved husband of 63 years to Barbara (Pitts) Mercurio of Weymouth. Loving father of Guy Mercurio and his wife Carole of Pembroke, Dominic Mercurio and his wife Bonnie of Wakefield and Lori Bartolomeo and her husband John of Weymouth.  Bill was a devoted family man who loved making lasting memories that will be forever treasured by his family.  He was the cherished “Papa” to Nicole, Nicholaus, Jonathan, Tyler, Danielle and Kelsey and Great “Papa” to Jacob, Joshua, Samantha, Cameron, Griffin and Ryan.  

Bill attended Richmond High School, Class of 1947, where he was an All Scholastic Varsity Letter Recipient in Baseball, Basketball and Track and Field.  He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Baltimore.  It is there where he excelled on the softball team and was able to travel to England to witness the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth. After graduating from the University of Purdue, Bill was employed for over 26 years by the Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge as a Draftsman and Checker.  Barbara and Bill loved to bowl together in various leagues over the years. He was named Champion of the Boston Globe Bowling Tournament. Bill had a passion for  auto racing. He was a member of the Weymouth Elks as well as the Whipple Senior Center.  He was a devout Catholic and served as an usher as well as lead the daily rosary prayer every morning in his earlier years in Immaculate Conception Church.  For over 10 years, Barbara and Bill volunteered as Friends of South Shore Hospital.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday 4-8PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 8:30 AM Friday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 9:30 AM. Burial in Village Cemetery, Weymouth.

Donations may be made in Bill’s memory to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.
