Walter J. Hannon Sr. of Quincy, Massachusetts and Kennebunkport Maine died on July 7, 2018 in Maine. Walter was born on September 4, 1931 to Walter and Helen Hannon. He grew up in the Houghs Neck section of Quincy where he lived until 1945 when he moved with his family to Wollaston.
Walter graduated from North Quincy High School in 1949. While in high school he was an outstanding hockey player and if asked what his favorite subjects were, he would reply, “shop, gym and lunch”.
In 1951 Walter met Patsy Tully. They married in 1953 and this was the beginning of a 64 year romance filled with love, laughter and kindness.
That same year, upon his father’s death, Walter assumed control of his family business, the Hannon Tire Company.
Walter served as Ward 5 City Councilor from 1964 to 1971, and as a State Representative from 1967 to 1973. Walter was elected Mayor of Quincy in 1972 serving until 1975.
Walter spent years in Quincy politics pushing to make Quincy a model city. His work as Mayor lead the ground work for Quincy’s Economic development today.
In 1979 Walter was named Director of Development by Marina Industries to direct the master planning of Marina Bay in Squantum. In 1996 Walter went to work for the Marina Bay Corporation to oversee the Granite Links Project, a reclamation of a quarry into a first class golf course and restaurant. Some doubted this would happen, but Walter never did.
For all of his accomplishments his greatest loves were his wife, children and grandchildren the true essence of what he was.
Walter enjoyed walks on Gooch’s beach with Patsy, as well as large family dinners at his cherished home in Kennebunkport. Together they attended every event that their children and grandchildren were involved in. A favorite was his Annual Christmas Girls Night out when he and Patsy took their five granddaughters into Boston for a special evening. He loved playing golf with his sons and grandsons at Webhannet Golf Club in Kennebunk, Maine. He was the best dad and Da a child could ever ask for.
