He relished living there and was often seen walking Nantasket Beach, fishing off Point Allerton or catching lobsters around the harbor. A local legend in baseball and football, Wally played for Hingham High School and later earned an athletic scholarship to NYU. While attending NYU, the U.S. Army called and Wally left for Germany, during the Korean Conflict, where he worked for the Army Security Agency with Morse Code. The position utilized his skills which were honed through many hours of word games and puzzle solving. While serving in Germany, he was married to his wife Elinor T. Cronin. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and renewed their vows. During his 25 years as a union pile driver for Local #56, he worked on such projects as the Callahan Tunnel, the MA Pike Extension, Rowes Wharf and the World Trade Center. He also served as the union’s president from 1982-1985. Being a devoted Hullonian, Wally had previously served on the Conservation Commission, was an assistant Harbor Master, and a member of the Harbor Study Commission. Friends and family will never forget the countless tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato juice shared with them from the bounty of Wally’s green thumb and famous tomato garden. Most of all, Wally loved and was loved by his family. They will remember him as a kind and gentle soul with a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed.
