Virginia M. Mccusker

McCusker, Virginia Marie, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2021 under hospice care at the Sonata Assisted Living in Vero Beach, Florida.  She was the beloved wife of 57 years to the late George Patrick McCusker (11/18/2005). Daughter of the late Emile Brouillard and Ann (McGowan) Brouillard. Loving mother of Carol Crosslin and her late husband John Crosslin of Quincy, MA, Walter McCusker and his wife Maureen McCusker of Vero Beach, Florida, James McCusker and former wife Jo Anne Gardyna of Waltham, MA, and Jane Schuler and her husband Robert Schuler of Lexington, MA. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, Erin McCusker, Caitlin Bangs and her three children Teddy, Camilla and Louis, Megan McCusker, Lauren Schuler, Alexandra Greenberg and her two children Jack and Beau, Brendan Crosslin and Ryan Crosslin.

Born in Cambridge on June 2,1927. Virginia grew up in Billerica, MA. A graduate from Howe High School (Billerica, MA) in 1945, where she was a starter on the woman’s basketball team, a member of the Drama club, and Vice President of the Senior Class. Following her graduation, she attended Katherine Gibbs secretarial school and worked in downtown Boston which she loved.

On June 13, 1948, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cambridge, MA, Virginia joined her heart and hand in Holy Matrimony to George P McCusker her high school sweetheart.  She and her husband “Mac” lived in Cambridge where all their children were raised. She was very active in the St. Paul’s Mother’s club where her social skills and organization of gatherings, fundraisers and theater productions “The Follies” were initiated. She and her neighborhood friends also had ceramic class at a friend’s house where they would shape, bake, and paint their own pottery—in 1963 their work was featured in the Sunday Boston Herald.

Our summers as a family were spent in Manomet, MA. On the last day of school we would all pile into the station wagon eating fresh baked bread and oranges leaving the car full of crumbs and orange peels. We all would spend every day on the beach, going home just before the sun went down and eat lobsters right out of the ocean, that she would buy from whomever had a good lobster catch. These were some of the highlights.  Both she and Mac would entertain the neighborhood with a spaghetti dinner in our yard or a night of bridge with the girls when the husbands were all working.  Those were good times!

Virginia returned to the workforce in 1971 and dedicated her career to the Cambridge Public School System. She worked as Secretary to the High School Principal, Administrative Assistant to Primary Education, and Administrative Secretary to Secondary Education.

Virginia and George purchased a home in Delray Beach, Florida and started their plans of retirement where they would spend their winters. Virginia was heavily involved in the Country Manors Community; Virginia was Coordinator of the Country Manor Bingo, President of the Country Manor’s Woman’s Club. She often organized bus trips for a show and a dinner trips to the casino and was a travel agent for many cruise trips which she and her friends truly loved.  Her talent and love for bridge continued as well.  In the summer months, Virginia and George would return to their vacation home in Manomet, MA where they would spend time with their children, grandchildren, and friends on the beach.

Virginia was a passionate and caring woman who loved to play cards, socialize with friends. Her children will always remember wonderful holiday’s especially Christmas, the art of setting a beautiful dining table with china with forks and spoons and knives in their proper place and a room full of gifts for all. Gift boxes and toys were wrapped beautifully and the tree glowing with lights and ornaments which have been passed down for us to have on our trees.  Watching golf, football, The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, old and new movies were some of her favorite things. “Ginny’s” children thank her for her laugh, her gift of laughter, love and support for all.

We not only had a providing and nurturing mother, but we also had a great friend and supporter. We will miss and never forget Virginia Marie McCusker. Our love and fond memories will never leave our hearts and minds.
