Byrne, Vincent P. age 92 Ret. Sgt.QPD and W.W II Army veteran of Quincy, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2009 surrounded by his family. Born and raised in the Clam Point section of Dorchester, he lived in Quincy for 60 years. Vincent served in the CCC’s during the 1930’s and worked on projects in Montana, Vermont and the Southwest. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the South Pacific as a Sergeant in the 374th Air Service Squadron. He was stationed in New Guinea where he received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to Dorchester and pursued a career as a union carpenter before joining the Quincy Police department in 1952. Vincent retired from the Quincy Police Department at the rank of Sergeant in 1980. He enjoyed the NY Times and other crossword puzzles, the Red Sox, playing the lottery and spending winters in Hawaii with his wife. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Florence M. (Reilly) Byrne. His children Joseph Byrne of Plymouth , Gerard Byrne and his wife Kerry of Raymond, ME, Lisa Byrne of Quincy and Michelle Byrne of Boston. His grandchildren Diana Gottlieb and her husband Cary of Boca Raton, FL, Colin and Bridget Byrne of Raymond, ME, Mark Seaver of Carver and great grandchildren Sienna Gottlieb of Boca Raton, FL and Mark & Arianna Seaver of Carver. He is also survived by his sister Regina Burkinshaw of South Yarmouth and many nieces and nephews. Born in 1917, Vincent witnessed the delivery of ice to the triple deckers of Dorchester by horse and wagon to the evolution of cell phones and the internet. His son Joe states “He was 92 years old. He had a good run.” Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Monday 4- 8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Wollaston. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15AM on Tuesday prior to the Funeral Mass in Saint Ann’s Church, Wollaston at 10 AM. Burial in MA National Cemetery, Bourne.
