Toufic “John” Hajjar

Toufic “John” Hajjar, 85, of Quincy, died at home on December 8th, 2012 while surrounded by his loving family. Toufic was born on October 27, 1927 in Kaitouly, Lebanon. He immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Quincy where he raised his five children alongside his loving wife of 64 years, Linda. Toufic is remembered not only by his beloved wife Linda, but also by his five children: Louise and her husband David Densmore, of Braintree; Michael and his wife Asma of Quincy; Susan of Hingham; Steven and his wife Jean of Cohasset; and Marianne of Quincy. Toufic will be deeply missed by his six grandchildren, Michelle Densmore, Jessica Densmore, Michael Hajjar, Danielle Hajjar, Elias Dagher & Nicole Hajjar. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews both in the U.S. and Lebanon. Toufic is the brother of the late Najib Hajjar and sister-in-law Antoinette, and is also survived by his five sisters, all of Lebanon: Marie and her husband Emile Hajjar; Milia and her late husband Ibrahim Hajjar; Alice and her late husband George Hajjar; Souad and her husband Joseph Youakim; Jamal and her late husband John Youakim. He is survived by his wife Linda’s siblings: Julia of Quincy; Mabel and her late husband Ferris of Quincy; and Sidney and his wife Evalynne of Milton. Toufic was passionate about his charitable endeavors including the Foundation Fighting Blindness, St. Jude, Father Bill’s Place, the World Lebanese Cultural Union Boston chapter & Our Lady of the Annunciation Church. From the time he arrived in the United States, Toufic was an entrepreneur. He began his first business selling fruits and vegetables to the local community. He segued into the clothing industry when he began selling clothes to the workers at the Quincy Point shipyard. Toufic got to know his customers personally and enjoyed the everyday interaction with the people he met. In 1950, he founded Hajjar’s Big & Tall Men’s Clothing. What began as a single store in Quincy grew to five retail stores. For years beyond his official retirement, Toufic was actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the company and enjoyed serving his customers, many of whom he knew by name. Toufic passed the lead role in the company on to his son, Steven, who carries on the great work his father began. Several other family members, spanning three generations, have also been employed at Hajjar’s Big and Tall. In 2011, Toufic was honored by the City of Quincy for his decades of outstanding citizenship, and generosity to the city he called home for 64 years. Toufic leaves behind a legacy of generosity, kindness and love for family. There is no better example of the success of the American Dream. He will be forever missed. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, Quincy on Wednesday at 9:30am. Funeral services in Annunciation Melkite Cathedral, 7 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury at 11am. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-8pm. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
