Thomas James Bellew passed away unexpectedly on August 19, 2022. He is resting peacefully with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in whom he had a deep, personal faith.
Tom was the devoted husband to Maggie, whom he loved wholeheartedly; loving father to his 8 children, Nicole (Mike) Lennon, Tommy (Becky) Bellew, Renee McGee, Jimmy (Erin) Bellew, Joey (Carla) Bellew, Rebecca (Stephen) Oehlschlaeger, Rachel (Blair) Bennett, and Steven (Whitney) Bellew; doting grandfather to his 29 grandchildren, Tommy, Jessica, Brittany, Joshua, Amber, Brooke, Mikaela, Teddy, Tegan, Ellie, Rachel, Bria, Juliet, Onnolee, Stephen, Joey, Noelle, Addie, Klara, Benny, James, Andrew, Emmie, Penny, David, Steven, Evie, Tommy, Onnie, and his great granddaughter, Colby; loving brother to his 5 siblings, Karen (Augie) Techeira, Walter (Patti) Bellew, Cynthia (Keith) McFetridge, Elizabeth (Doug) Walker, and the late Timothy Bellew; and loving uncle to many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was born to the late Dolores (Allard) Bellew and Thomas Walter Bellew in Dorchester where he lived until his family moved to Hingham, where he graduated high school and eventually raised his own family.
Tom served his country as a Green Beret in the 5th Special Forces Group (A). He served three tours in Vietnam with the highly classified and decorated MACV-SOG between 1969-1971.
Though his military service set him apart, he is best known for a legacy that he was far more proud of – his huge, loving, tight-knit family. When he wasn’t working at the family tile shop, he could be found with an armful of grandchildren on his lap, reading them stories, watching Tom and Jerry, and telling them how special they were to him.
Tom’s greatest gift was, by far, his storytelling, coupled with his hilarious sense of humor. His children would beg him for bedtime stories when they were young, and as adults they were just as enthralled in the stories of his fascinating life and world travels.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during visiting hours on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, 4-8pm in Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.) Hingham.
Funeral Service will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at 10am in South Shore Baptist Church, 578 Main St. Hingham.
