Thomas Herde

Herde, Thomas J. of Hull, an award winning photo journalist for the Boston Globe for 20 years, died at his home on March 1, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer, he was 62. Son of the late Joseph & Elsa (Rosengren) Herde. Brother of Susan Robbins and her husband Stanley of Middletown, NJ and Diane Smith and her husband Glenn of Tinton Falls, NJ. Uncle of Chris Robbins of Fairfield, VA , Brian Robbins of Middletown, NJ , Justin & Skyler Smith of Tinton Falls, NJ. Born in Plainfield, NJ , he graduated from high school in Long Branch, NJ. He started his career in photography at Long Branch Daily Record. His career was interrupted by his Army service. Tom served in the United States Army Infantry from 1968 until 1974, serving in combat in Vietnam’s Iron Triangle, where he earned a Bronze Star. After his military service, Tom returned back to the Daily Record , he would later work at the Trenton Times and the Newark Star Ledger before arriving at the Boston Globe in January 1987. Tom will be remembered as a gifted photographer, who will be missed by those who were fortunate to have known him. Services were private. Arrangements were completed by the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home.
