Mr. Thomas F., Jr. Joyce, of Weymouth, died October 8, 2023.
Tom was born and raised in South Boston, the second of nine children born to Thomas and Rose (Duffy) Joyce. Although he and his wife Helen moved to Braintree to raise their six children, Tom was deeply rooted in South Boston. His childhood friends became his lifelong friends who became more like family as the years passed. The bond, the nicknames, and the songs will be forever embedded in his history.
Tom worked for 35 years for the Massachusetts Trial Courts, he started his career in the housing court as a Court Officer, transitioned to Chief Court Officer, and then achieved the position of Deputy Director of the Massachusetts Trial Court Services. He was very proud of his work and the friendships made through his work.
Golf was by far his favorite pastime. He was always ready to coach his children, grandchildren, and extended family. He held a lifetime membership at Furnace Brook Golf Club in Quincy. Golfing with friends and family for over 40 years there, he would head South, to Naples Florida during the winter months to continue to build his golfing legacy. He didn’t just play for fun, Tom won many awards and tournaments over the years. He made some great friends along the way, several of whom met recently at the Eire Pub in Dorchester to reminisce about the good old days at the Brook.
Tom was a proud member of the Castle Island Association. He enjoyed the numerous trips and activities, including the monthly meetings at Fort Independence, where friends could meet and discuss their pride in the history surrounding them.
Tom was a member of the Braintree Elks. He joined when they were located at the former Cochato Club in Braintree where he enjoyed being in the bowling league with his daughters.
The Elms in Weymouth was Tom and Helen’s final residence. Here they met new friends. He would meet every weekday morning in the community room with his good friend Joe for coffee and catch up with other tenants and friends. His time there brought peace and comfort to his family because they knew he was surrounded by kind people who cared and looked out for each other.
Above all things, Tom was a wonderful Grandfather. He had seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and would happily take on this role for anyone who needed an extra Grandparent. The families and friends he met during the last several years were very special to him. He enjoyed attending the different sporting events to chat with the other parents and grandparents, all the while cheering the kids on with his famous whistle.
Tom enjoyed a long life, filled with a large and loving family. Filled with an extensive list of great friends. Filled with an innumerous number of parties and gatherings. Filled with music, singing, and an amazing sense of humor. Everything that brought him comfort in his life will now bring comfort to those he leaves behind.
Beloved husband of the late Helene J. (Skarbinski) Joyce.
Loving father of James M. Joyce of South Boston, Suzanne Joyce of Braintree, Brenda Joyce of Braintree, Patricia Donovan of Braintree and the late Maureen Heffernan and Thomas E. Joyce.
