Thomas E. Arthur

Arthur, Thomas E. of Hingham, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on November 22, 1938, passed away peacefully at home on October 18, 2018, just shy of his 80th birthday, surrounded by his loving family.

Beloved husband of 55 years to Rosemary S. Arthur (Stewart) of Hingham. Cherished father of David Arthur and his wife Pamela of Kittery, ME, Elizabeth Arthur and Sharon Arthur, both of Berkeley, CA.  Loving brother of Eileen Rowsell and her husband Ian of Canada and of the late Samuel J. Arthur and late wife, Edna, of Northern Ireland. Devoted “Granda” of David Jr., Emilie, Dylan, Aidan, and Ronan. Beloved brother-in-law of Liz, Irene, Roberta, Joanne, Gillian, and their spouses. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, whom he loved very much, in the US and abroad.

Family and friends know his wife Rosemary was the love of his life. He cherished and valued his family deeply. A real fan of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, Tom loved spending time with them and hosting family holidays.

Tom was a man of many interests. A low-handicapper, Tom enjoyed playing golf in Ireland and in the US. In his retirement, he and his friends were also delighted to discover that he was a talented painter. Tom was a great dancer, which helped him woo his wife when they first met 60 years ago. He was an avid Rugby supporter, not only from his own time as a player in Ireland, but also as he coached both Boston University and Boston Rugby Club teams. Tom was also one of the founders of Hingham Youth Soccer.

Professionally, he was a gifted engineer, owner and founding partner of Engineers Design Group, a structural engineering company. He was a founding partner of Transit Realty Associates. Passionate about everything he did, Tom had great integrity in all aspects of his business. As a man of strong faith, Tom was a longstanding and devoted member of the Hingham Congregational Church, where he served on a number of boards and was very involved in the church community, including the church’s Annual Christmas Tree Sale, and in the church’s sponsoring role with Hingham’s famous annual “Taste of Hingham” event. He was a member of Hingham Rotary and Old Colony Lodge. Curious and loving an adventure, Tom enjoyed traveling with his wife several times a year, especially to their second home in Northern Ireland.

Over the past 6 years, Tom courageously battled an aggressive brain tumor.  His family gives special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Mass General Hospital Neuro-Oncology Center; Spaulding Rehabilitation Center, Charlestown; the Dwyer Home in Weymouth; and NVNA and Hospice who all took such good care of him.

Through all his life, Tom was a friend to everyone he met and had a genuine interest in those around him. His family and friends can testify he was an excellent role model, always motivated, generous, kind, loving, and with a great sense of humor. He truly will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend A Celebration of Tom’s Life on Saturday, November 3rd, at 11 a.m. at the Hingham Congregational Church, Main Street, Hingham.
