Means, Sumner H. died December 27, 2013. a lifelong Hull resident, passed away on December 27, 2013 at The Golden Living Center Nursing Home in Cohasset. He was 93 years old.
Sumner was the last surviving member of the original Means family having settled in and around Hull in the early 1900’s. The most noted of that family tree, was Captain Joshua James, his maternal uncle and founder of the U.S. Lifesaving Service the forerunner of the U.S. Coast Guard. Along with his brothers; Jeff, Roger and Elton, he was a Hull firefighter for 30 years.
Sumner was the brother of the late James, Barbara, Urna, John, Royal, and Virginia. During the 2nd World War he served as a naval corpsman. A Catholic and daily communicant, he was a long standing member of St. Anne’s Parish. He was also a honorary member of the Hull Knights of Columbus. In his spare time, Sumner enjoyed dancing, going out for dinner, and always was willing to help out others at a time of need. Mr. Means is survived by numerous nieces, nephews as well as grandnieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visitation on Thursday January 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church, Hull at 11 A.M.
Burial will be private.
