Deputy Superintendent and career veteran of Boston Emergency Medical Services, Commander of Special Operations, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Much loved husband of Patricia of Quincy. Devoted father of Kristen and Gregory, both of Mansfield. Cherished grandfather of Jonathan and Victoria. Beloved son of Marie (Cheney) Lawlor. Loving brother of Thomas, Robert, Marie, Joseph, John, Ann, Michael, and Karen. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Keohane Funeral Home 785 Hancock St., WOLLASTON Tuesday at 10:00 AM. Funeral Mass in Saint Ann’s Church, Wollaston at 11:00 AM. Visiting hours Monday 4 – 8 PM. Cremation will follow. Deputy Superintendent Stephen M. Lawlor, Commander of Special Operations for Boston Emergency Medical Services, died Friday after a lengthy illness. He was 50 years old. Mr. Lawlor was born in Dorchester and lived in Quincy at the time of his death. He began his long and distinguished career in 1972 as an emergency medical technician for a private ambulance service. In 1978 he joined the Boston EMS, the City Ambulance Service. Mr. Lawlor’s position overseeing Special Operations included planning for such high profile events as the Boston Marathon, First Night, July 4th on the Esplanade, and presidential visits. He was also involved with homeland security and anti-terror preparedness for the City of Boston. He was the recipient of numerous professional awards including the distinguished Pozen Award for paramedic of the year. He was well known among his peers for the highest level of professionalism, compassion, kindness and humility. He was truly one of Boston’s finest. In 2001, Mr. Lawlor was featured in the City of Boston public awareness campaign for cancer survivors with other prominent Bostonians including Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Boston Red Sox President Larry Luchino, Arts and Entertainment Reporter Joyce Kulhawik, and News Reporter Charlie Austin. He loved boating in Boston Harbor, was an avid skier, and enjoyed traveling. He loved his large family dearly.
