Stephen M. Flaherty

Flaherty, Stephen M. “Pup” of Hanover (formerly of Quincy), passed away peacefully surrounded by all his loving family on January 2, 2023.

Beloved husband of Gail Flaherty of Hanover (formerly Quincy). Loving father of Susan Stapleton and her fiancé Steven Sullivan of Milton and Laura Drummey and her husband Peter of Hanover. Cherished brother of Brian Flaherty and the late Ellen Flaherty of Warwick, RI, Terrance Flaherty and his wife Patricia of Scituate, Richard Flaherty and his wife Geri of Braintree, and the late Ambrose Flaherty and his surviving wife Karen of Quincy, and the late Michael Flaherty and his surviving wife Paula of VT. Devoted “Pup” of Caitlin, Cara, Stephen, Andrew, and Nolan. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Steve was born to the late Ambrose and Mary Flaherty on June 18th 1943 in Boston and was proud to be raised in Dorchester MA during his youth.  Stephen was a young athlete back then even referred to as the “Dorchester Magician” on the basketball court by local papers.  It was Dorchester where he would meet the love of his life Gail (Todd) Flaherty.  They were married for 55 years and enjoyed every second of each other’s company until the day he passed.

Together they started their own commercial cleaning company, Flaherty Cleaning Company. Later in life, Stephen worked as the softball pitching coach at Curry College, something that he was so proud of.  But, what he was most proud of was his biggest accomplishment, and that was his family.

Pup, as he was known to his family, cherished the time spent with his family over anything else in the world. His grandchildren meant everything to him. He never missed anything in their lives.  He loved watching his grandchildren participate in any sport or activity they were involved in that season or school year. Steve followed all Boston sports avidly and loved to golf, especially with his son in law.  He loved life.  He always had a smile and a welcoming hello.   He will be greatly missed by all. To know him was to love him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday 4-8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9 AM on Wednesday prior to the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Quincy at 10 AM. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Stephen may be made to the Cara Foundation for Cancer Comfort, 100 Evergreen Ave, Braintree, MA 02184 or to the Tim Drummey Memorial Scholarship, 1526 Broadway, Hanover, MA 02339.
