Stephen J. Giove

Giove, Stephen J., of Quincy, died July 4, 2013. 

Stephen’s life was filled with the joys of family, work and giving back to his community.  He joined the National Guard at the age of 17 and was part of a group of men that marched over the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges when they were first built.  He later joined the United States Navy and served during WWII.  Stephen was said to have had “golden hands” and could create or fix anything.  This led to a career as a cabinet maker and woodworker.  He owned and operated Steve’s Woodworking Shop on Beach Street in Quincy for over 40 years.  He was proud of his work and many of his items were created for Quincy Public Schools.  Upon retirement, he continued to help disabled veterans at the Brockton VA learn woodworking skills, something he enjoyed until age 90.  His other passions included cooking, playing cards and the Red Sox.  He will be remembered for his friendly manner, gentle touch, and generous nature.

Devoted husband of the late Rose R. (Goodman).  Loving father of Phyllis Backstrom and her husband Roy of Sagamore Beach, and the late Francine Cook and her late husband Tom.  Stephen was pre-deceased by 6 brothers and sisters.  Loving Papa to Jennifer Hallett of Pembroke, Thomas Cook of Assonet, Lisa Hrono of Hanson, and Stephen Kavol of Foxboro. Great Papa to James, Brenden, Laura, Ryan, Shawn, and Alexa.  Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and former son in law William Kavol of Kingston. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Monday 4-7 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 Tuesday prior to the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Quincy at 10 AM. Burial in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Donations in memory of Stephen may be made to Norwell Visiting Nurse Association, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061.
