Silvio “Sy” C. Volpe, of Weymouth, 89, died peacefully at home on April 11, 2013.
Beloved husband of Arlene (Masny) Volpe. Born in NYC, Sy served proudly in the 17th Airborne Division during WWII, received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained during the Battle of the Bulge. Graduated class of 1949 from Cornell University School of Eng. and sang in the Cornell Glee Club. During his 50 year career in the power industry, he founded ENEC Corp., often traveling to the Far East and South America. He and Arlene completed 60 cruises, the most memorable being to Bermuda with their children and grandchildren. Sy took great joy singing in the Old South Church Choir, the Fine Arts Chorale, the Consistory Choir and Aleppo Chanters. A true Mason, over the last 66 years he affiliated with Phoenix Lodge, Heather Lodge (Canada), Consistory, Scottish Rite and Aleppo Shrine. He was a past Monarch of Taleb Grotto.
Devoted father of Katherine Smith and her husband Doug of Austin, Texas; Jean Volpe and her partner Toni Duval of Weymouth; Deborah Conrad and her husband Darrell of Nova Scotia and Stewart Volpe of Brockton. Stepfather to Greg Weremey of Harwichport and Kim Bender and her husband Scott of Wellesley. Cherished grandfather of Adam and Ashley Volpe; Jessica Blanck and her husband Jon; Marcia, Catherine and Gregory Conrad; Breton Smith; Cole and Zachary Bender. Loving great-grandfather of Jacob and Jayson Blanck. He leaves sisters-in-law Wilma Strachan and Jean Hennessey; mother-in-law Mary Masny and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his loving wife Alma (Strachan) Volpe.
Charismatic, handsome Papa Sy with his infectious smile loved everyone and was loved in return.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 3-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte. 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Masonic Service will be held at 4 PM. A Celebration of Life service by Rev. Terry Martinsen will follow in the funeral home at 7 PM. Donations may be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33067.
