Sharon Elizabeth Ballsmith (Singletary), of Hull, MA, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 7, 2024. She was 70 years old.
Sharon was born in Charleston, SC to Mary Lou Singletary (Alsobrook) and Neil Edward Singletary, Sr. (Retired USAF). Her father was in the US Air Force, so the family travelled extensively when Sharon was growing up. After her father’s many duty stations in the United States, they were transferred to Clark Air Base, Philippine Islands and eventually Taiwan. It was while at Clark Air Base in the Philippines that she graduated from high school and met the love of her life, Nicholas “Nick” Ballsmith (former USAF). The two hit it off, fell in love and eventually were married in Richmond, Kentucky in February of 1973. After marriage they relocated to Panama City, Florida, where Nick was stationed. In July of 1974, upon completion of military service, they would begin a new journey relocating back to Kentucky. In 1977, their son Kenneth was born.
The move back to Kentucky also ignited a passion that would blossom into a career for Sharon. It was in the hills and mountains of Kentucky that she would learn the art of crocheting. What was once a hobby slowly became something that would blend work into pleasure. Her work earned her recognition by being published in many crochet books and magazines, but she remained humble and true. To her, the work was always simply a passion. In her spare time, if she wasn’t creating with her art and new designs, she enjoyed cooking with her husband, Nick, antiquing, taking road trips and simply being by the ocean.
Sharon was down to earth, supportive and a wonderful person that will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She believed strongly in her faith, had compassion for all and a unwavering commitment to God.
Beloved wife of 51 years to Nicholas J. Ballsmith of Hull, MA. Devoted mother to her son Kenneth Ballsmith and his wife Diane of Warwick, RI. Cherished daughter to Mary Lou Singletary (Alsobrook) of Lexington Park, MD. Adoring grandmother to Daniel, Jacob and James Ballsmith. Loving sister to Cindy Oros and her husband Paul of Fort Pierce, FL, Trish Spidel and her husband Tom of Hollywood, MD and Neil Edward Singletary, Jr. and his wife Julie of Lexington, KY. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her father, Neil Edward Singletary (retired USAF).
Services for Sharon will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sharon’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
