Rodney L. Milburn

Rodney L. Milburn of Hingham. Died at home in Hingham on October 28, 2010. Born in Elkton, MD, son of Louis D. Nesbitt of Chester, PA and Lily Milburn Price of Elkton, MD Retired Marketing Manager of Telecommunications for 30 years with New England Telephone, Nynex Corp, which later became Bell Atlantic and Verizon, he was previously employed in management at United States Steel Corp in Worcester, MA and joined the telephone company when US Steel closed the Mass. facility. Recently he was happy to serve when needed as a substitute Special Needs van driver for the Hingham Public Schools. Rod was attending Xavier University in New Orleans, LA when he left to enlist in the United States Air Force where he served four years active duty in the Middle East, Tripoli and Libya as airborne radar technician until he was hand-picked to serve on a special project at MIT, Lincoln Laboratory, was housed in Cambridge, MA and completed his tour of duty at Hanscom Field in Bedford. He then returned to academia to complete his education, enrolling in Newman Prep before attending Northeastern Univ. School of Electrical Engineering. His sports prowess was well known in the Boston area where he was recognized as an outstanding softball pitcher with a long history of no-hitters; and as an umpire. He also served for many years as the last president of the South Shore Citizens Club, a civic organization dating back to the 1940’s that raised funds to provide scholarships for outstanding minority students. He leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 50 years, Judith (Branker) Milburn, his beloved and devoted daughter, Karen Vickerman of Hingham, Michelle Thomas of Charlotte, NC and the late Kimberly Milburn of Portugal, and dearly beloved grandsons, Isaiah Milburn, and Christopher and Robert Thomas of Charlotte, NC; brothers and sister, Melvin Price of DE, William R. Price of NC, Charles K. Price of DE, Joan Price Saunders of MD, the late Arthur E. Milburn of MD and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A Memorial celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Second Congregational Church, 43 Highland Ave. Cohasset, MA 02025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Hospice of the South Shore, 100 Bay State Drive, Braintree, MA 02185-9060.
