Gallagher, Robert W. of South Weymouth, passed away April 6, 2015.
Beloved husband of the late Phyllis E. (Fountain) Gallagher. Loving father of Robert F. Gallagher and his wife Kathleen of Middletown, NJ and Frederick Gallagher and Donna Sprague of South Weymouth. Dear brother of surviving sister, Emily Goodwin of Halifax. Cherished grandfather of Ryan, Joel and Todd. Great grandfather of Joshua and Marissa.
Robert was a proud US Navy Veteran of WWII. He enlisted September,1940 and served on 3 Navy vessels. The first vessel Robert was aboard was the heavy crusier, The USS Quincy CA 39 (1940-1942) during the battle of Savo Island. Robert survived the sinking of the ship during Invasion of Gaudal Canal, August 8, 1942. Robert continued his service to our country aboard the fleet oil tanker, The USS Kennebec 0-36. After requesting submarine duty, Robert was sent to US Naval submarine base in New London, CT. After completion of the program he was sent to the Pacific aboard, The Flagship, The USS Holland ST-3 until the end of the war in 1945. He was discharged in December 1946, returned to Boston and worked for the National Bisquit Company (Nabisco) as a sales representative. After 34 years in the company, Robert retired in June, 1981.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 8:30 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 9:30 AM. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
